It's far from easy to understand wholesome meals for ourselves.
But it's even more difficult to get sound, honest and unbiased advice on healthy food for our pets.
Pet food companies, if run purely as businesses, are simply a for-profit enterprise that put your pet's health, at best, second.
Do you feel torn between all the "offers" and advertising claims of pet foods?
Here's my honest, proven and practical "guide in a nutshell" to help you judge for yourself if a pet food brand is worth your pet - and your money.
1. Refined carbs like white and brown rice in the food recipe are a NO GO. They're considered "dirty fuel".
2. Ingredients with names that you don't understand (except if you have a science degree) are a RED FLAG. Chemicals and health don’t go together well.
3. More than two different protein sources in one meal can irritate pets with a sensitive gut. CAUTION!
4. A large variety of added veggies is NOT better! A range of vegetables, if routinely consumed, can negatively influence your pet’s thyroid, joint function, urinary tract or cause digestive issues. UGLY consequences!
5. "Anonymous" pet food businesses keep their owners' and staff identities, as well as their educational background, undercover... If you are proud of your products, wouldn't you happily introduce yourself and your staff? What are the UGLY secrets here?!
6. Unreasonably cheap or expensive prices are both QUESTIONABLE!
Cheap foods are likely produced by using poor quality ingredients and made by unqualified or underpaid staff. If pet food prices are “too good to be true”, it’s pays to stay away to avoid BAD consequences for your pet!
Expensive or "premium range" foods should tick every single of the above 5 listed quality criteria. If only one of the listed criteria is missing, high-end pet food is, quite simply, a rip off. Your money, spent on such overpriced pet food products, is unlikely to keep your pet save from common health problems. Pricey food companies allocate much of the earned money on advertising, to "buy" spokespersons or for other hyped publicity to "legitimize" unsubstantiated claims. There is less money for quality ingredients, research and production... BAD.
So, if you're "caught between a rock and a hard place" because you are unsure what is truly the best for your precious furkid, use my simple criteria points to judge any brand of pet food for yourself.
Is the food you’re eyeing worth your pet's health, your trust and your money?
